Martin Van Buren

The Martin Van Buren NHS (built in 1797) was in need of extensive roof repairs. The Phase 1 of this project included replacement or repair of cracked and wide roof shingles and repair, cleaning and sealing of chimney and valley flashing. Replace chimney brick; rake out failed mortar joints, repair brownstone banding, pointing and chimney painting. A new roof / gutter snowmelt system was installed. All the ridge boards on the house were replaced using clear heart cedar to match the existing widths. Shingles and step flashing were removed and the flashing with ice and water shield around the base of the northwest chimney was replaced. It Disconnect and then reconnect the existing lightning protection system to accomplish replacement of the ridge boards. This detailed project was completed per schedule. The Phase 2 consisted of installation of a new heating and dehumidification system as well as the coordinating of all operations required for upgrading the mechanical and fire detection system. The new ductwork and fire alarm systems were run through closets, down chimneys and in confined attic spaces so as not to compromise the integrity of this historic property. The Phase 3 consists of installing a high-pressure water mist fire suppression system. A critical component of this work was mitigation of disturbance to the historic building fabric and museum collections on the property. Phase 4 furnishing all materials, labor, equipment and supervision and performing all operations required to complete the exterior carpentry repairs and repainting for Lindenwold and South Gate Lodge structures located at MAVA – NHS, Kinderhook, NY.
